Text Box: COMMUNICATION GAME FOR DEMENTIA

In November 2007, Helma van Rijn and I won a subsidy from the Dutch province of North Brabant to elaborate our award winning game for dementia. We came up with a concept that stimulates the communication and interaction between people with dementia, “De Klessebessers”. Kiss the Frog and KITT helped us to elaborate our concept into a commercial product. ID-Studiolab helped us build the first prototype for the competition of North Brabant. The set will be available in May 2009.

CONCEPT
`De Klessebessers´ (the chitchatters) are a television, radio, telephone and a chest. Next to each object stands a small light. When the light switches on people can activate the object next to it. When they pick up the phone a nursery rhyme is narrated. The television shows an old clip that corresponds to their youth. The radio plays a song of the old days. In the chest they will find a object, for example a model car of the Beatle. The caretaker controls what and when an object can be activated. The subjects in the objects appear random. This way the caretakers also stay enthusiastic.

REACTIONS
´It is a bit nostalgic. You think, 'Do I remember this?` And than you think `I remember!` It was very pleasant, definitely!´ Woman with dementia.

`I enjoyed it very much. You get the feeling people really listen to you. I think that is very very important.´ Man with dementia

´People that are normally not very talkative, are now the ones with the most stories.´ Caretaker.
